Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi III (1938-2022): A Roundtable and a Day of Tributes

The recent passage of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, to immortality has continued to generate discussions and debates across all spectrums of life. There is no doubt that his 52-year reign witnessed phenomenal achievements in the field of education, community development, modern infrastructure, culture, effective security, peace building and recognition of the Alaafin as a global brand. Alaafin Adeyemi III was an Oba who loved Yoruba culture and made it a strong aspect of everyday life even up till his last moment on earth. .... Read more

CBAAC 2023 International Conference: Arts, Culture and the Development of African Creative Economy

In the year 2000, the United Nations declared the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with the aim of reducing to the barest minimum, by 2015, global poverty and hunger, illiteracy, gender inequality, child and maternal mortality, epidemics and other global development challenges. Unfortunately, available evidence shows that most, if not all countries in Africa, will not achieve the MDGs by 2015. The Millennium Development Goals' (MDGs) vision which is enshrined in the Millennium Declaration (General Assembly resolution 55/2) and rooted in the Charter of the United Nations, identifies the need for all countries to pool efforts and resources in achieving development, peace and security, and human rights for the collective well-being of all people. In the Declaration a pertinent pledge was made by signatories to spare no effort to free all people from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of poverty. Predictably so, 2015 has passed and Africa remains in the woes of the quests and strivings to achieve the Global Development Agenda......... Read more

International Conference on Ile-Ife and Yoruba Civilisation: The Nexus between Tradition and Modernity

Ile-Ife is the cradle of Yoruba civilisation. According to Yoruba traditions, Ile-Ife was founded by the eponymous ancestor of the Yoruba people, Oduduwa, who also became the first divine king of the Yoruba people. The name, Ile-Ife, literally means the place of dispersal. Its very existence suggested the peopling of the Yoruba world from this sacred site. We welcome proposals, panels, papers and poster presentations that will enhance scholarly conception and understanding of Ile-Ife as the cradle of the Yoruba race and as the cultural headquarters of the black people. Given the centrality of Ile-Ife in Yoruba history, worldview, philosophy, religion and state formation processes, this conference brings together the fragmented pieces of Ile-Ife's cultural, political, demographic, social, economic and intellectual history from a multiplicity of perspectives. This conference deserves widespread interest and attention. Indeed, from the time it came into existence until Yoruba civilisation crystallised, Ile-Ife has played significant roles in ensuring that the people's cultural values, ideals and philosophies have remained sacrosanct.......
